The ancestors rejoice every time we plant a seed.
Coyote Gourd Farms
Coyote Gourd Farms is an acknowledgement of Black folks who have made home in Tovaangar. The Coyote Melon is a sacred gourd of the Tongva people, who love and steward these lands surrounding and including South Central Los Angeles. As African people, the Calabash gourd is sacred to us as well, for within it sits the spirit, and it represents the world that holds us all. This marriage of the two speaks truth to a past, present and future where Black folk, as Natives stolen from our homelands, are in deep spiritual community with the peoples and other-than-human relatives whose homelands we are guest in.
In service of this deep and deepening relationship, we grow California Native seeds lovingly harvested by Tongva conservationist and dad, Nicholas Hummingbird, at Walqaqsh Native Seeds. We also learn from him and other Tongva folks about best practices for land “management”, plant care and rematriation of our other-than-human relatives. We also pay a Kuu’y Nahwa’a, a guest exchange, to the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy.
