About Community Supported Agriculture

“If your hands in the dish, folks won’t eat everything without you". - Twi Proverb
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an agricultural strategy that is deeply cooperative. Started by Black horticulturalist Booker T. Whatley, it encourages community investment into farmers through a subscription model, usually paid upfront. This offers the farmer a secure and consistent income to weather the many storms, and offers the community a consistent source of fresh produce with far more convenience and culture than a grocery store.
This is one of many examples of Ujamaa, cooperative economics, that Black folks in America have carried from our ancestors and reinvented in our new world. Agriculture for us has always been people powered, with us at every level of the food system. Long before enslavement, Black folks have fed, clothed and supported ourselves on the land, in cooperation with one another. We have always been in love with the land, and She has always loved us. Even in the concrete jungles we haven’t forgotten, with Richland Farms of Compton and the old Crenshaw Dairy Farm as two of many examples.
